Biodiversity and Environmental Heritage

Biodiversity is critical to supporting healthy ecosystems. This includes creating spaces that are more resilient to the effects of climate change and are able to deal with extreme weather events. This in turn reduces carbon emissions. All our work across the site is underpinned by a dedication to creating and caring for biodiversity, nature and wildlife. The National Lottery Heritage Fund project, and many other funded projects, have helped increase, protect and value natural biodiversity and the environmental heritage of the site.

Biodiverse Roof

The building refurbishment has ensured the existing flat roof has capability to support:

  • an intensive, biodiverse planting space for pollinators and wildlife habitats

  • helping to protect the longevity of the roof

  • provide cooling at times of extreme heat, and insulation when it’s cold, improving the thermal performance of the building

Across the Estate you will see the creation of additional biodiverse spaces, providing homes for wildlife and native planting.

These were created thanks to a 2024 crowdfunding campaign supported by Liverpool City Region Environment Fund and hundreds of community members.
